Bolon and Martino Gamper turn flooring into art with Riquadro in Milan

Bolon has opened Riquadro, a new installation created with Martino Gamper during Milan Design Week 2026.

Presented at BOLON STUDIO as part of Capsule Plaza, the project reimagines woven flooring as an artistic and architectural surface rather than a background material.

Flooring becomes the focal point
RIQUADRO transforms Bolon's woven flooring into floor-to-ceiling wall panels and low plinth seating pieces. By cutting, layering and recomposing the surfaces, Gamper treats the loom as a drawing instrument, creating bold geometric compositions of colour and texture.

The result is an immersive interior where flooring becomes the dominant visual language of the room.

Gamper said the project was intended to reverse the usual hierarchy of interiors, where flooring is often overlooked despite being one of the largest surfaces in any space.

Sustainability message timed with Earth Day
The presentation coincides with Earth Day on 22 April, reinforcing Bolon's environmental positioning.

The company says all of its flooring products contain 68% waste material and are manufactured with zero climate impact per square metre. Production takes place in Sweden using renewable energy.

That sustainability narrative is increasingly relevant as architects, hospitality groups and workplace designers seek low-impact finishes without compromising aesthetics or durability.

Why it matters for interiors
For the commercial interiors market, RIQUADRO highlights a broader shift: surfaces once viewed as purely functional are now central to brand storytelling and spatial identity.

Flooring manufacturers are increasingly competing in the same design conversation as furniture, lighting and wallcovering brands. By showcasing at Milan Design Week, Bolon positions itself not only as a flooring supplier, but as a design-led materials brand.

Brand pedigree
Led by sisters Marie and Annica Eklund, third-generation family business Bolon has supplied projects for brands including Google, Apple, Chanel and Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts.

The installation runs through 26 April 2026.
