MEDUM explores light and shadow in immersive Milan installation

At Milan Design Week 2026, Tokyo-based MEDUM presents Light is Shadow, an installation examining the relationship between illumination and darkness through material experimentation and spatial design.

Staged at Back12 in the Tortona district from 20 to 26 April, the project centres on the Japanese concept of awai, understood as the subtle threshold between opposing states. Rather than positioning light and shadow as contrasting elements, the installation treats them as interdependent conditions, shaping perception and atmosphere.

The exhibition incorporates a series of prototypes developed using inorganic electroluminescent (EL) materials, typically applied in light-based technologies. Within this context, the material is reinterpreted as both a functional and conceptual medium, enabling a nuanced exploration of luminosity, diffusion and transition.

Visitors are guided through an immersive environment where light is modulated to create shifting spatial conditions. The installation aims to encourage sensory engagement, positioning light not only as a source of visibility but as a tool for defining space and experience.

Founded by Shintaro Monden, MEDUM operates across product, spatial and experiential design, with a focus on integrating technology into everyday environments. The studio's work has received international recognition and is included in collections such as the Pinakothek der Moderne and Design Museum Danmark.

With Light is Shadow, MEDUM contributes to the broader Milan Design Week programme by exploring the intersection of technology, perception and design, highlighting how intangible elements can influence spatial understanding.
