IKEA to open new Museum of Furniture Studies in converted warehouse

IKEA, in collaboration with Cobe, will transform a former warehouse in Älmhult into a new home for the Museum of Furniture Studies, with opening scheduled for early 2027.

The museum, originally founded in 2017, houses a collection of more than 1,300 furniture pieces by over 40 international designers and was acquired by IKEA in 2024. The new site will reintroduce the collection in a physical setting, following a period of digital-only access.

The project focuses on adaptive reuse, retaining the building's industrial structure while introducing new timber elements and exhibition spaces. The design will combine historical and contemporary furniture, presenting the evolution of materials, techniques and functionality from the 19th century to today.

Beyond exhibition, the space is conceived as an interactive platform for learning and experimentation, featuring workshops, lectures and community events. The aim is to position furniture not only as a product, but as an evolving design discipline.

The development reflects a growing trend within the interiors sector towards circular design and the repurposing of existing structures, while also reinforcing Älmhult's role as a key hub in global furniture culture.
