Ingka Group has opened a new small-format IKEA store in eastern Beijing, marking a continued shift towards more accessible retail formats and bringing the brand closer to urban communities.
The 1,500 m² store, located in the Wangfujing WellTown shopping centre in Tongzhou District, offers more than 3,000 home furnishing products and includes personalised planning services alongside a curated food offering. The opening represents IKEA's fifth location in the Chinese capital and forms part of a broader strategy to adapt store formats to local living patterns.

Pontus Erntell, CEO of IKEA China, said the expansion reflects the importance of Beijing as a key market, adding that the retailer aims to reach more customers through both physical and digital channels.
The Beijing launch follows a small-format store opening in Shenzhen and contributes to a wider global rollout. Since the beginning of 2026, Ingka Group has opened 21 new locations worldwide, spanning Europe, North America and Asia. These include a mix of store formats, ranging from compact urban locations to larger retail spaces exceeding 4,000 m².
Javier Quiñones, Global Commercial Manager at Ingka Group, noted that the company is continuing to diversify its approach to retail. He emphasised that no single format fits all markets, with expansion strategies increasingly tailored to local needs and behaviours.
Recent openings include new stores in Huntsville, Alabama, and Phoenix, Arizona, as well as upcoming developments such as a city store in Los Angeles. The company has also introduced new partnerships, including collaborations with Best Buy stores in the United States, expanding access to IKEA products through third-party retail environments.
In addition to traditional stores, IKEA is extending its reach through smaller "plan and order" points in locations such as Visby in Sweden and Pula in Croatia, enabling customers to design and order products locally.
The expansion is supported by Ingka Group's €5 billion investment programme, aimed at opening new locations and upgrading existing ones across its 32 markets.
