Consumer confidence in Germany has fallen sharply, reaching its lowest level in over three years, according to the latest data from the German Retail Federation Consumer Barometer for May 2026.

Confidence continues to decline
The index recorded its steepest monthly drop since January 2024, extending a downward trend that has been building in recent months. Sentiment is now at its weakest level since February 2023, reflecting growing pessimism among consumers.
Households are increasingly concerned about both rising prices and the broader economic outlook. Expectations for future economic development have deteriorated to their lowest point since early 2023.
Weak consumption outlook
The data suggests that a recovery in private consumption remains unlikely in the near term. Ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly global conflicts, are continuing to weigh heavily on consumer confidence.
Despite recently introduced government relief measures, there has been little positive impact on sentiment. Uncertainty around their effectiveness, combined with a fragile economic environment, is reinforcing a cautious approach to spending.
Economic uncertainty persists
The German Retail Federation warns that the decline in sentiment points to another economically challenging year ahead. Hopes for a recovery at the start of 2026 have been undermined by geopolitical developments, including escalating tensions in the Middle East.
As a result, no significant improvement in consumption or overall economic growth is expected in the coming months.
