Ikea to launch new store format in France

IKEA is preparing to roll out a new small-format retail concept in France called Ikea Compact, aimed at bringing the brand into medium-sized cities and locations beyond its traditional out-of-town megastores.

According to Le Figaro, the first two stores will open in Limoges between late May and early June, followed by Le Mans in July.

The new format will range between 2,000 and 4,000 square metres, significantly smaller than Ikea's classic "blue box" stores, which typically span 15,000 to 30,000 square metres. France currently has 36 traditional Ikea stores.

Johan Laurell said the strategy is designed to get closer to French consumers, enter underserved mid-sized markets, and expand into areas far from existing large-format stores.

Despite the reduced footprint, Ikea says customers will still recognise the core brand experience, including a guided room-by-room shopping route, accessories areas, and an in-store food offer. However, restaurants will be reimagined as smaller bistro-style spaces with takeaway options. Most products will be available for immediate pickup, while the rest can be ordered for delivery.

The model reflects a more asset-light expansion strategy. Rather than purchasing land and constructing stores, Ikea plans to lease existing retail units in shopping centres or retail parks. The rollout forms part of the company's €1.2 billion French investment plan for 2023–2026.

The concept has already been tested in markets including the UK, Poland and the United States. For the wider furniture retail market, Ikea Compact signals a continued shift toward convenience-led formats, omnichannel fulfilment, and smaller urban or regional footprints that can complement larger destination stores.
