A longstanding furniture retailer in Naperville, Illinois, is set to close at the end of April, bringing to a close a 165-year trading history.
The family-owned retailer, Beidelman Furniture, traces its origins to 1861 and has been recognised as the oldest business in DuPage County, according to local reports. Its current premises at 239 South Washington Street have housed the company since 1928.

The building was designated a historic landmark by the Naperville City Council in 2024, reflecting the retailer's long-standing role in the local commercial landscape.
In a social media post dated 16 April, the company thanked customers and confirmed that its final day of trading will be 29 April. Local coverage cited "changing times" as the reason for the closure, with the owning family expected to provide further details later.
The closure adds to a broader pattern of long-established furniture retailers exiting the market amid shifting consumer behaviour, growing digital competition and continued pressure on bricks-and-mortar operating costs.
Independent regional retailers across the US have increasingly faced challenges adapting to evolving purchasing habits, as consumers move online for research and transactions while showroom traffic remains uneven.
For Naperville, the closure marks the loss of a business that operated through multiple generations and became part of the town's identity. For the wider industry, it underlines the pressure even heritage retailers face in a rapidly changing retail environment.
