Abode says material choices are reshaping UK kitchen design priorities

Abode says material selection has become a defining factor in kitchen renovation decisions, as UK consumers increasingly prioritise durability, finish quality and long-term performance alongside appearance.

The British kitchen and bathroom specialist argues that homeowners are now more informed about product construction, coatings and maintenance demands, pushing retailers and designers to provide clearer guidance on how materials behave over time.

Beyond surface appeal
According to Leanne Stansfield, customers are looking beyond aesthetics in search of products that can withstand daily wear while maintaining visual appeal.

This shift is particularly visible in the kitchen "wet zone", where sinks and taps are no longer viewed as purely functional components. Instead, they are increasingly central to the overall design scheme, with finishes chosen to complement cabinetry, worktops and hardware.

Rise of engineered granite and PVD steel
Abode highlights growing interest in engineered granite sinks and PVD-coated steel products, which are gaining traction as alternatives to traditional stainless steel and natural stone.

Composite granite is valued for colour consistency, scratch resistance and easier integration into coordinated kitchen palettes, while PVD (physical vapour deposition) coatings are being promoted for improved durability, fingerprint resistance and premium finishes such as brass, gunmetal and matte black.

These categories are also benefiting from a wider consumer move toward tactile materials and warmer, layered interiors.

Four material-led design principles
Abode's guidance to retailers and consumers centres on four priorities:

  1. Choose intelligently: align material type with lifestyle, budget and durability needs.
  2. Manage expectations: ensure desired aesthetics also meet practical requirements.
  3. Be transparent: explain maintenance, lifespan and real-world performance honestly.
  4. Think holistically: coordinate sinks, taps and furniture finishes for a cohesive look.

Why it matters for retailers
The company says growing consumer knowledge means showrooms and installers are increasingly expected to understand technical differences between materials, coatings and finishes.

For kitchen retailers, that creates an opportunity to shift the sales conversation from price alone to value, longevity and design integration.

Wider market context
Norcros, Abode's parent company, continues to benefit from premiumisation trends across kitchens and bathrooms, where customers are investing selectively in statement fixtures even amid broader economic caution.

As renovation budgets tighten, products that combine aesthetics with practical resilience are expected to remain among the strongest-performing categories in 2026.
