Behind the scenes in Milan: vast logistical operation for the 64th Salone del Mobile

One day ahead of the opening of the 64th edition of Salone del Mobile.Milano, the organisation is offering a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the international design fair. At Fiera Milano Rho, work is currently underway on the construction of a large-scale exhibition that will open its doors on 21 April.

Images from the "making of" process show how the event evolves from concept to experience. In the previous edition, more than 800 stand-building companies and over 58,000 specialised workers were involved in the set-up and dismantling. This year again reflects a large-scale operation in which design, engineering and execution come together.

The construction includes the pavilions hosting the Salone Internazionale del Mobile, Workplace3.0 and S.Project. In addition, the biennial exhibitions EuroCucina with FTK – Technology for the Kitchen and the International Bathroom Exhibition are taking shape, alongside newer concepts such as Salone Raritas, the Aurea project and the experimental SaloneSatellite.

In total, more than 1,900 exhibitors from 32 countries are working on a fully sold-out exhibition space covering over 169,000 square metres. This results in a dynamic landscape of structures, materials and ideas gradually coming together.

The released images highlight the process itself: from technical installations and structural frameworks to the final detailing of exhibition stands. They illustrate how designs are progressively brought to life.

According to the organisers, this phase reveals the essence of design: a collective act of making. The preparations are therefore not only a logistical undertaking, but also the opening chapter of the story the Salone presents each year – one in which design is portrayed as a living system of people, expertise and shared visions.
