Realdania has awarded DKK4.2m to ten companies developing bio-based construction materials made from Danish agricultural resources, as part of efforts to strengthen domestic supply chains and reduce reliance on imports.

The funding supports products including straw bale wall elements, windbreak panels made from grass fibres and insulation derived from by-products of biorefining and biogas production.
Realdania said Denmark has significant untapped resources from agriculture, forestry and marine environments that could be used in construction materials, but the market remains dominated by imported products and underdeveloped value chains.
Project manager Stig Hessellund said wider adoption of bio-based materials requires coordinated development across the full chain, from raw material sourcing to finished products.
The wider programme, titled Roads to biobased construction, carries a total budget of DKK46m and also includes eight pilot projects across new-build and renovation schemes. These projects are intended to test the materials in practice and address barriers such as pricing uncertainty, delivery reliability, documentation and limited industry experience.
Supported businesses include Gramitherm Nordics, Leaf Packaging ApS, Halmworks ApS and Bioverse HempTech ApS.
The initiative reflects growing interest in locally sourced, low-carbon alternatives for the building sector.
