Study reveals widespread mattress safety failures in UK market

A joint investigation by the National Bed Federation and the European Bedding Industries' Association has found that 65% of mattresses imported from outside the UK and EU failed to meet required UK fire safety standards.

The study, named Project Phoenix, tested 101 mattresses purchased from both online marketplaces and traditional retailers in the UK, with prices ranging from £47 to £450 for a single mattress. Accredited laboratories assessed the products against British fire safety standards and compared them with claims made online and on product labels.

According to the findings, many non-compliant mattresses failed required flammability tests under BS 7177, the British Standard used to demonstrate safety under the General Product Safety Regulations. Researchers also identified misleading product claims, insufficient textile fibre labelling and concerns regarding foam fillings that may not comply with UK Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations.

The organisations said the findings highlight "a deeply concerning lapse in safety compliance" among products sold through several major online marketplaces and platforms. They added that the issue is creating unfair competition for compliant manufacturers and retailers investing in proper testing and regulatory standards.

The NBF and EBIA warned that consumers expect mattresses purchased both online and in-store to meet legal safety requirements and stated that urgent action is needed to improve product monitoring and enforcement.

The results of the investigation have been shared with UK government regulators, alongside calls for stronger oversight of products entering the market.
