Japanmade debut at 3daysofdesign highlights cross-cultural craft dialogue

Japanmade Vol.1 will launch during 3daysofdesign 2026 from 10–12 June, introducing a curated showcase of contemporary Japanese design and craftsmanship in Copenhagen.

The exhibition, located at Dampfærgevej 2 in the Nordhavn district, is a collaboration between Danish design practice OEO Studio and Danish-born, Japan-based writer and producer Jens H. Jensen.

Japanmade brings together a selection of Japanese brands that continue to manufacture locally, supporting networks of specialised small and medium-sized producers while maintaining close links between designers and craftspeople.

"Japan has an extraordinary wealth of both design and production capabilities that resonates well with the Nordic and European markets. My idea in launching Japanmade was to create a platform during 3daysofdesign to bring like-minded Japanese brands together and create a destination for anyone excited about Japanese contemporary design," said Jensen.

OEO Studio designed the 75m² exhibition as an immersive spatial narrative, reflecting its long-standing engagement with Japanese craftsmanship and material culture. The installation combines Japanese minimalism with Scandinavian functionality, drawing on more than two decades of collaboration with Japanese artisans and manufacturers.

Participating brands include New Light Pottery, MAS, Naowashi, Sekisaka and Sheep.

The exhibition highlights a shared focus on material intelligence, with works ranging from washi paper lighting and handcrafted ceramics to timber furniture made from hinoki cypress and lacquerware rooted in centuries-old techniques.

Thomas Lykke said: "The essence of Japan is deeply embedded in our studio and philosophy, holding equal significance to our Scandinavian origins. Our professional connection with Japan began 20 years ago, and from the very beginning, we felt a strong bond that has developed into wonderful new ventures, such as the Japanmade initiative with our long-standing friend Jens H. Jensen, whom we first met during our inaugural visit to Japan."

Anne-Marie Buemann added: "Our shared passion for design, craftsmanship and Japanese culture drives this initiative. We pursue it with enthusiasm and curiosity, aiming to promote a love for Japan through a fresh perspective – one that honours its traditions while being curated with the discerning eye and narrative of an editor."

The organisers described Japanmade as the first edition of a recurring platform, designed to foster ongoing cultural exchange between Japan and Europe.

For the wider design industry, the exhibition reflects growing interest in craftsmanship-led production, material authenticity and cross-cultural collaboration, positioning Copenhagen as a key stage for global design dialogue.
