Danish retail sales rise in March as consumers loosen spending

Retail sales in Denmark increased by 2.5% from February to March, adjusted for inflation, seasonality and trading days, according to new figures from Statistics Denmark.

The latest data suggests Danish consumers are becoming more willing to spend after a period of caution, supported by real wage growth and tax reductions that have improved household finances in recent years.

Reports indicate that seasonal categories benefited from the early spring period, with DIY retailers among the businesses seeing stronger activity. The trend may also provide a positive signal for home improvement, furniture and interiors-related spending as consumers begin outdoor and renovation projects.

The March uplift points to improving confidence in discretionary retail categories after a subdued trading environment across much of Europe. For home and furniture retailers, stronger store traffic can often translate into increased demand for renovation-led purchases, storage, garden products and selected interiors items.

While one month of data does not confirm a sustained recovery, the rise will be closely watched by retailers and suppliers across the Nordic market as an indicator of consumer sentiment heading into the second quarter.

Denmark has faced the same inflationary and cost-of-living pressures seen elsewhere in Europe, but easing price pressures and firmer household incomes may now be starting to support spending patterns.

For the wider home sector, improving consumer confidence remains a key factor in unlocking postponed purchases, particularly in furniture, kitchens, décor and DIY categories where buyers have delayed discretionary projects.
