Bed Bath & Beyond and Container Store begin nationwide hybrid reset

The Container Store has started a nationwide transformation of its estate into a new hybrid retail concept with Bed Bath & Beyond, with 98 stores beginning clearance activity to prepare for redesigned layouts and expanded product ranges.

From 24 April, participating locations will liquidate around 30% of categories and SKUs to make space for a curated Bed Bath & Beyond assortment. The clearance programme is taking place across stores and online.

The move comes less than a month after Bed Bath & Beyond agreed to acquire The Container Store, together with Sweden-based Elfa and Chicago-based Closet Works, in a $150m transaction.

The remodelled stores, averaging 21,000 square feet, are expected to combine merchandise across bed, bath, storage and organisation, kitchen and entertaining categories. The concept will also broaden existing home services beyond closets to include flooring, lighting, kitchens, laundry rooms and bathroom cabinetry.

Jen Pape, senior vice president of stores at The Container Store, described the initiative as "a reset with purpose", saying the business is actively reshaping stores to prepare for the next phase.

The 98 stores span 34 states, signalling a rapid national rollout rather than a limited pilot scheme.

The project reflects continued consolidation in the US home retail sector, where brands are combining physical footprints, broader assortments and in-home services to drive customer traffic and increase basket size. If successful, the hybrid format could provide Bed Bath & Beyond with a faster route back into bricks-and-mortar retail while giving The Container Store access to a wider whole-home proposition.
