The traditional benches, commonly seen in Danish public spaces, had been installed to improve streets and squares in the city centre. Each bench weighs around 100kg, yet thieves have continued to remove them.

According to local reports, the benches were initially secured with bolts. Following earlier thefts, authorities introduced additional protection by welding and gluing them into place. Despite these efforts, two more benches have since been stolen.

The incidents highlight the growing challenge municipalities face in protecting street furniture and urban design assets from vandalism and theft. Public benches are increasingly valued not only for their practical use, but also as part of wider placemaking strategies aimed at improving city centres and enhancing visitor experience.

The Copenhagen bench is regarded as a recognisable element of Danish urban design, combining durability with a classic appearance that has made it a popular choice for municipalities across the country.

Local authorities in Kalundborg have not yet indicated what further security measures may be introduced, but the continued losses suggest existing methods have not been sufficient to deter theft.
