Why Gen Z is sinking into the slouchy couch

Gen Z has embraced the "slouchy couch" trend, favouring low-slung, plush seating that blends comfort with style. Inspired by 1970s lounge aesthetics, these sofas often feature soft, foam-filled structures, rounded silhouettes, and materials like brushed velvet or worn-in leather. The trend reflects Gen Z's love for personal expression and playful design, with interiors designed to feel inviting and individual.

At the forefront of this movement is Michel Ducaroy's iconic Togo sofa, originally designed in 1973 for Ligne Roset. With its all-foam construction and toothpaste-tube-inspired shape, the Togo has become a staple in the homes of stylish Gen Zers and celebrities alike, including Kenzie Ziegler and Colman Domingo.

Interior designer Audrey Scheck notes that Gen Z is "bringing character back to home design," embracing whimsy and soft forms that suggest comfort and nostalgia. These sofas are particularly suited to small or cosy spaces, offering a chic solution for low ceilings or 'cocoon rooms'.

While the original Togo commands a high price, many affordable lookalikes are now available, making the style more accessible to younger buyers. This trend confirms that the desire for laid-back, expressive living is more than just a passing phase.
