60th anniversary edition of the Shell Chair

Carl Hansen & Søn celebrates the Shell Chair’s 60th anniversary with an exclusive edition made of rosewood and oak, available with or without a seat upholstered in black, matt aniline leather. A small brass plate engraved with Hans J. Wegner’s signature is mounted on the back of the chair.

The Shell Chair was first presented on September 20th, 1963, at the Cabinetmakers’ Autumn Exhibition in Copenhagen and was initially considered revolutionary and avant-garde. It took 35 years for the chair to achieve its current level of popularity and true recognition, which serves to underline the visionary quality of Wegner as a designer.

The chair is characterized by a graphic design language and excellent comfort. The wing-like seat gives the chair a floating lightness and demonstrates Wegner’s superior knowledge of wood and carpentry. To add stability to the three-legged chair, Wegner developed a distinctive double frame.

'Hans J. Wegner was an eminent designer, and the Shell Chair is a testament to his visionary aesthetic which deserves to be marked with an outstanding anniversary edition. We have chosen to render the shells in rosewood. Its characteristic, dark and warm grain contrasts beautifully with the oak frame', says Knud Erik Hansen, CEO of Carl Hansen & Søn.

The rosewood clearly references to the warm and vibrant wood types commonly used in the Danish Modern Design movement of the 1950s and 1960s. The legs are made from FSC-certified oak. The chair is furnished with or without black, traceable aniline leather from organically raised Danish cattle, thereby securing a transparent and responsible sourcing of the wood and upholstery.
