England independent home furnishings retailer to cease trading after more than five decades

An independent home furnishings retailer in Suffolk, England, has announced it will cease trading and enter administration, bringing an end to over 50 years of operation. The business, located in Woodbridge, will close its doors on 7 May 2026. Founded in 1969, the retailer has remained a long-standing presence in the town's high street.

In a statement, owner of Barretts of Woodbridge, Jill Barrett, said the closure follows a prolonged period of financial pressure, as sales failed to keep pace with rising operating costs, including energy, fuel, wages, National Insurance, pensions and business rates.

She also highlighted structural changes in retail, noting that out-of-town retail parks and the continued growth of online shopping have significantly altered consumer behaviour.

"Shopping habits have undoubtedly changed," she said, adding that these shifts, combined with escalating costs, led to the decision to cease trading.

The company confirmed that most customer orders have already been fulfilled or arranged, with remaining deliveries to be finalised in the coming weeks.

The closure reflects broader challenges facing independent furniture retailers, many of which are struggling to balance rising costs with evolving shopping patterns and increased competition from larger and online players.
