Colour and finish take a softer, more layered approach for summer 2026

Kohler and The Shade Store are highlighting a clear shift in Summer 2026 interiors: away from bold statements and towards layered, sensorial environments shaped by subtle colour palettes and tactile finishes.

Rather than dominating a space, colour is increasingly being used to support atmosphere—creating interiors that feel intentional, calm, and lived-in. Across kitchens, bathrooms and soft furnishings, the focus is on depth, materiality and quiet contrast.

Sun-washed neutrals lead the palette
Warm, light-reflective tones are emerging as a defining direction for the season. Soft sands, chalky whites and muted terracottas are being used to create a sense of openness and calm.

Kohler reflects this through brushed brass finishes and soft matte whites, while The Shade Store introduces airy linen textures and subtle weaves that gently diffuse natural light.

Earth tones deepen the narrative
Organic palettes are evolving beyond soft neutrals into richer, more grounded hues. Deep olive, clay and mineral-inspired tones add contrast and structure to otherwise light-filled spaces. These tones are often layered rather than contrasted harshly, pairing sculptural fixtures with textured fabrics to create a tonal, cohesive effect.

Gloss returns, used with restraint
After years dominated by matte surfaces, gloss is reappearing in a more controlled way. Rather than overt shine, it is used strategically to introduce light play and visual depth. Enameled finishes and sleek surfaces are positioned against tactile textiles, creating a balance between reflection and absorption.

Tailored contrast defines the look
Designers are increasingly confident in mixing finishes, combining polished metals with raw textures, or structured architectural lines with soft drapery. This approach emphasises precision and intentionality, where contrast is carefully curated rather than dramatic.

Subtle accents replace bold colour
Instead of saturated palettes, colour is being introduced in restrained, thoughtful ways, through trim, hardware, piping or a single upholstered element. The result is interiors that feel expressive yet controlled, allowing personality to emerge without overwhelming the space.

Across Summer 2026, the overarching direction is clear: interiors are becoming more nuanced and layered, with colour and finish working together to shape mood, texture and experience.
