UK independent carpet retailer left devastated after fire destroys store

An independent British carpet retailer has confirmed that its store in Retford has been destroyed following a major fire, leaving the family-run business facing significant disruption.

The incident occurred at MCP Carpets on 27 April 2026 at the company's premises on Hospital Road, with crews from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service responding to the blaze. At its peak, the emergency response involved seven fire engines, an aerial ladder platform and a command support vehicle. No injuries were reported, and an investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.

In a statement, MCP Carpets described the घटना as "devastating," confirming that the premises had suffered extensive damage. The business emphasised that all staff and individuals were safe, noting that this remained the most important outcome.

The retailer also expressed gratitude for the support received from the local community, customers and neighbouring businesses in the immediate aftermath. As operations have been halted, customers with outstanding orders have been asked to make contact via email while the company works towards recovery.

The incident highlights the vulnerability of independent retailers to unexpected disruptions, particularly those operating from single locations. Fires of this scale can result not only in physical damage but also prolonged interruptions to trading, supply chains and customer fulfilment.

MCP Carpets has indicated its intention to resume operations, although no timeline has been confirmed.
