Søstrene Grene opens major Dutch distribution centre to support European growth

Danish lifestyle retailer Søstrene Grene has officially opened a new 45,000m² distribution centre in Venlo, the Netherlands, strengthening its logistics network and supporting continued expansion across Europe.

The opening was celebrated with more than 250 guests, including employees, property partner Prologis and local officials, including Ryan Palmen, mayor of Horst aan de Maas.

The Venlo facility complements the retailer's existing 28,000m² distribution centre in Denmark, creating broader coverage for European markets and additional capacity for future growth.

According to the company, the site has been developed with sustainability targets in mind and is prepared for BREEAM Excellent and WELL Gold certification standards. The building is fully electric and includes a rooftop solar installation designed to generate enough power for daily operations while also contributing electricity to the local grid.

Søstrene Grene said it is also investing in a highly automated logistics set-up intended to optimise workflows, improve workplace conditions and reduce waste and energy consumption.

Mikkel Vaupell Grene said the new centre marks an important milestone in the company's expansion strategy, adding that future growth must remain aligned with its sustainability ambitions and employee-focused culture.

Venlo has become a strategic logistics hub for European retailers due to its location and transport links, making it an attractive base for cross-border distribution operations.

The investment highlights how home and lifestyle retailers are increasingly combining network expansion with lower-emission infrastructure and automation to improve resilience and efficiency.
