Austria's timber market is entering the second quarter of 2026 under increasing uncertainty, as external pressures begin to influence supply and pricing dynamics.
According to the latest market update, prices for spruce sawlogs are expected to remain broadly stable, with spruce grade B (Media 2b+) currently trading between €127 and €130 per cubic metre. Sawmills are seeking to maintain price stability to ensure continued supply, avoiding disruptions in timber availability.

However, geopolitical developments are creating growing concern. The war in Iran has disrupted established export routes, leaving significant volumes of sawn timber unable to reach their original destinations. This surplus is being redirected into alternative markets, increasing supply and potentially placing downward pressure on sawn timber sales. As a result, the upstream roundwood market is also exposed to volatility.
Despite these challenges, demand for industrial roundwood remains strong, with prices holding steady and supported by bonus payments for fresh coniferous timber.
Seasonal factors are also coming into play. Rising temperatures have triggered renewed bark beetle activity, while prolonged storage increases the risk of blue stain fungi. These conditions are prompting calls for closer coordination between forestry operations and buyers to manage harvesting schedules effectively.
Overall, while current pricing remains stable, the Austrian timber market is navigating a complex landscape shaped by geopolitical disruption, shifting trade flows and seasonal risks.
