Prostoria brings unfinished modernist visions into design in Milan

Croatian furniture and design brand Prostoria will present Revisiting Richter at Salone del Mobile 2026 in Milan, unveiling a new collection based on the unrealised work of architect, artist and designer Vjenceslav Richter (1917–2002). The exhibition introduces, for the first time, a series of furniture pieces developed from Richter's original prototypes, sketches and conceptual studies.

Showcased at Pavilion 24, Stand C25, the presentation reflects a long-term cultural initiative by Prostoria to explore and reinterpret Richter's archive. Recognised for his contribution to Zagreb's cultural and architectural landscape in the late twentieth century, Richter played a role in shaping European modernism, although his work has remained less visible outside specialist circles.

Through Revisiting Richter, Prostoria positions itself as both custodian and interpreter of this legacy. The collection is the result of years of research and technical development, translating archival material into contemporary furniture adapted for present-day use. Rather than reproducing historic pieces, the project establishes a dialogue with Richter's approach, drawing on his geometry, architectural thinking and systems-based methodology.

The collection, comprising five series and 20 pieces, is being presented publicly for the first time in Milan. It reflects Prostoria's continued engagement with Croatian design heritage and its intention to bring regional modernist narratives to a wider European and international audience.

Tomislav Knezović, Founder and CEO of Prostoria, said: "The decades following the mid-20th century were somewhat of a "golden age" for Croatian architecture, art, and design. It was a time of strong cultural optimism - something we need again today - when creativity, industry and society were closely connected. Vjenceslav Richter is undeniably one of the leading visionaries from this period, whose legacy is especially valued at Prostoria. With Revisiting Richter, we wanted to bring these ideas into real life - not as a reproduction of the past, but as its continuation. This project is not only about furniture, it is about reconnecting with a cultural moment, and allowing those ideas to live again today."

A key example within the collection is the VR61 chair, originally designed for the Italia 1961 exhibition in Turin. Prostoria has refined the proportions, ergonomics and construction while maintaining the original concept, resulting in a piece suited to contemporary interiors.

The exhibition design, developed by Numens/For Use, reflects Richter's systematic approach through a geometric structure with illuminated projections of archival material, creating a visual connection between past and present.

With this project, Prostoria contributes to a broader re-evaluation of modernist design from South East Europe, positioning Richter's work within today's global design discourse.
