Studio Piet Boon merges sculptural form and everyday comfort in the Hugo armchair

A striking new addition to the contemporary seating design of Studio Piet Boon has arrived with the launch of the HUGO armchair, a piece that masterfully balances expressive form with daily functionality. Available in both swivel and fixed-base options, HUGO reflects a seamless dialogue between structure and softness, crafted for a range of modern interiors—from residential living rooms to executive offices and high-end hospitality spaces.

Designed with sculptural intent, the HUGO armchair features a distinctive wooden shell, visually split into two halves and connected by a subtle opening at the back. This elegant design detail not only reduces the visual weight of the chair but also "adds lightness and emphasises craftsmanship," underscoring the armchair's artisanal quality.

The interior is equally considered. 'Generously padded cushions wrap the seat, back, and armrests, softening the structured silhouette and creating an inviting, cocoon-like experience,' the designers explain. This rich juxtaposition of a defined outer shell with a welcoming upholstered core results in a piece that is tactile, inviting, and quietly luxurious.

The swivel version introduces 'freedom of movement, making it ideal for dynamic environments, from residential lounges to executive offices or hospitality spaces,' the brand notes. This versatility encourages interaction without compromising on visual harmony or spatial presence. Meanwhile, the fixed-base version offers the same sculptural identity and immersive comfort, making it well-suited for environments that call for grounded elegance and stability.

'In both versions, HUGO combines structure and softness, delivering a quiet yet powerful statement,' Studio Piet Boon asserts. This duality is key to HUGO's success: bold enough to serve as a design centrepiece, yet subtle enough to harmonise with its surroundings.

HUGO's visual language is one of contrast, where sharp lines meet gentle curves, and geometric precision is softened by plush upholstery. This tension creates a sense of dynamic calm, making the armchair not just a functional object, but an expressive presence in any space.

The design reflects a broader trend in contemporary interiors that favours emotional comfort and human-centric form. By merging architectural discipline with tactile richness, HUGO aligns itself with discerning tastes and evolving expectations in both residential and commercial design.

With its launch, the HUGO armchair sets a new benchmark for seating that is as visually compelling as it is functionally versatile. Whether in motion or at rest, it exemplifies the potential of modern furniture to enhance space, not just through comfort, but through considered form and craftsmanship.
