A well-known home furnishings retailer in Luxembourg, has closed its final two stores, officially ending its 30-year presence in the Grand Duchy. The company will be declared bankrupt on Wednesday afternoon by the Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce.
The closures affect locations in Esch-sur-Alzette and Bertrange. In a Facebook announcement, the company, Sichel SA, expressed "great sadness and deep regret" over the decision, stating that 18 employees would lose their jobs. Support will be provided by the National Employment Agency (ADEM).
Sichel cited ;declining purchasing power and shifting consumer habits' as key factors behind its downfall, describing these challenges as "insurmountable". The shutdown follows the gradual winding down of operations, including the closure of a 2,000 m² showroom in Howald in 2024 and two other Bertrange outlets earlier this year.
Founded in 1995, Sichel specialised in furniture, tableware, and home accessories. At its peak, it operated multiple showrooms across Luxembourg and was a prominent name in the local home décor sector.
