German housing approvals jump 24.1% in February

Germany recorded a sharp rise in residential building approvals in February 2026, offering a positive signal for the country's housing, construction and home interiors sectors.

According to Destatis, permits were issued for 22,200 homes during the month, up 24.1% year-on-year, or 4,300 additional approvals compared with February 2025.

New-build housing drove the rebound, with approvals for newly constructed homes rising 30.6% to 19,000 units. By contrast, permits linked to conversions of existing buildings fell 4% to 3,200.

For the first two months of 2026, total approvals reached 41,700 homes, an increase of 16.2% compared with the same period last year.

Multi-family housing remained the dominant segment. Authorities approved 21,900 new apartments in apartment blocks between January and February, up 18%. Single-family homes rose 14.2% to 7,800 units, while two-family homes climbed 25.8% to 2,400.

The figures suggest Germany's housing market may be recovering after a prolonged slowdown driven by higher borrowing costs, inflation and weaker developer confidence.

For the furniture and interiors industry, stronger approvals are an encouraging leading indicator. New residential construction often supports future demand for kitchens, fitted furniture, flooring, lighting and household goods, although completions typically lag permits by many months.

If momentum continues through 2026, the rebound could help stimulate wider demand across Germany's pressured home and furnishings market.
