Ikea reshapes retail with launch of compact Harlow store

IKEA has opened a new-format store in Harlow Retail Park, Essex, marking the first of its planned small-format sites on UK retail parks. The Harlow location offers a more convenient, accessible shopping experience, forming part of IKEA's strategy to be "closer to more people in more places."

The compact store design allows for faster development and lower costs while maintaining key elements of a traditional IKEA store. Customers can explore roomsets, use kitchen and bedroom planning services, and enjoy Swedish food options. Same-day takeaway and next-day product collection are also available.

Peter Jelkeby, UK and Ireland CEO and CSO, described the opening as "a landmark moment" for the brand in the UK. He noted that the new store reflects IKEA's evolving retail strategy and praised the Harlow team, especially Richard Geddes and Josh Hartley, for their role in delivering the project.

The Harlow opening will be followed by similar small-format stores in Norwich and Chester, as IKEA continues to diversify its footprint. Jelkeby added that IKEA looks forward to becoming part of the Harlow community, stating: 'Together, we're creating better lives for the many.'
