Danish exports face sharp downturn amid US tariffs

Danish exports to the United States have dropped by 25 percent between the fourth quarter of 2024 and the first quarter of 2025, according to data from Statistics Denmark. The sharp decline is being attributed to recent tariff measures introduced by US President Donald Trump.

Chief economist Tore Stramer of the Danish Business Association described the fall as "a very dramatic decline over a single quarter, which is unprecedented in the history of statistics". However, he noted that the decrease follows a significant surge in exports towards the end of 2024, suggesting a possible correction.

President Trump has recently imposed a baseline 10 percent tariff on a range of countries and signalled further punitive trade measures. These actions have unsettled international markets and are now believed to be impacting Danish-US trade relations directly.

Stramer commented that the current situation is likely to deteriorate further, stating: 'We must also expect that trade with the US will come under further pressure in the coming period.' The long-term implications for Danish exporters remain uncertain, with concerns mounting across several industries reliant on the American market.

Denmark exports hundreds of billions of kroner in goods and services to the US annually, making the US one of its most important non-European trading partners. The sudden contraction highlights the vulnerability of global trade flows to political decisions and tariff policies.

This development raises broader questions about the resilience of Danish export sectors in the face of rising protectionism and underscores the need for diversified market strategies going forward.
