Paola Lenti interviews "The Play-Dough Man" Oki Sato, also known as Nendo

The Japanese architect and designer Oki Sato, known as Nendo, was invited to write the second chapter of Mottainai, a project initiated by Paola Lenti in 2022 to recover and reuse textile surpluses.

Nendo gave new beauty to the multicoloured remnants of Maris fabric and designed the Hana-arashi collection, a range of furniture and accessories - including lamps, stools, baskets, and a swivel chair - which will be presented during Milano Design Week 2024 at the Gallery of Paola Lenti Milano, a space dedicated to all forms of contemporary art expression.

Nendo worked with a material that is stable yet malleable and capable of adapting the shape of the object independently. In this way, he created a collection of poetic yet functional objects characterised by unpredictable colour gradients and a luminous, translucent texture.

In a spontaneous and friendly conversation, the famous Japanese designer explained, amidst playful jokes, thoughtful moments, and smiles, what the name Nendo means, how he shapes his relationship with Milan and nature, the role speed plays when he develops a new project, and what collaborating with Paola Lenti meant to him.
