Mater launches biodegradable furniture collection by Patricia Urquiola

Mater, the Danish green-tech design brand, has collaborated with renowned Spanish architect and designer Patricia Urquiola to create the Alder collection, which debuts at Milan Design Week 2024. The collection, which can be used indoors and outdoors, is made from a new biodegradable blend of Matek, a patented material and technology by Mater that turns waste into a mouldable raw material.

A resource that starts and ends in nature
The collection emphasises sustainability through the use of biodegradable materials and a focus on disassembly for upcycling. It includes various furniture pieces like lounge tables, side tables, and stools, offered in different sizes and colours inspired by nature. The base of each design features soft, curvilinear forms that complement the simplistic edges of the top.

The CEO of Mater, Ketil Ă…rdal, highlights the company's commitment to pushing the boundaries of traditional furniture production towards a more sustainable future. He emphasises the importance of using rapidly renewable resources like biodegradable plastic, such as sugar cane, which can be harvested multiple times a year and decomposed by living organisms.

Patricia Urquiola, the designer behind the Alder collection, expresses her enthusiasm for collaborating with Mater and their shared commitment to sustainable design. Additionally, Mater and Urquiola collaborated with Tableau, a Copenhagen-based creative studio specializing in deconstructed floral design concepts, for a unique installation that celebrates the power of natural materials.

The Alder collection will be showcased at Via Bartolomeo Eustachi, 51, 20129 Milano, Italy, from April 15th to 19th.
