Poundland announces further store closures amid restructuring

Poundland has confirmed a fresh wave of store closures as part of its ongoing restructuring programme, with 14 more locations set to close by early February. These follow 19 previously announced exits, bringing the total number of closures since the programme began to over 100. Clearance sales of up to 40% are already running at affected stores.

The discount retailer, sold to Gordon Brothers for £1 in June, avoided administration in August after securing a High Court-approved restructuring plan. As part of the turnaround, Poundland has simplified its pricing structure, returning to a £1, £2, and £3 grocery price model across its UK estate. The total store count is expected to fall from around 800 to between 650 and 700 once the programme concludes.

Poundland UK country manager Darren MacDonald acknowledged the disappointment closures cause for local communities but said the additional markdowns would "help us leave locations we're leaving with pride." He emphasised that customers would still be welcomed at the hundreds of stores that remain open across the UK.

The latest closures include sites in Lancaster, Weston-Super-Mare, Hammersmith, Northampton, Prestatyn, and Liverpool, among others, with dates stretching from December 19 to February 8. Previously announced closures are still ongoing, affecting locations such as Worthing, Ballymena, Portishead, and Brighton.

The move reflects Poundland's broader strategy to streamline operations, remove underperforming stores, and focus on a more sustainable and profitable retail model.
