AI tools shake up interior design but can’t replace the human touch

As artificial intelligence tools become increasingly integrated into interior design, experts agree that while AI enhances efficiency, it cannot replace human creativity or expertise.

AI platforms like ChatGPT, Midjourney, and Motion are helping designers generate mock-ups, visual prompts, and automate project schedules. San Francisco-based designer Ellie Stein uses AI to generate rapid visualisations that help clients make decisions faster. She also relies on scheduling tools like Motion to manage complex timelines.

Rachel Blindauer, a designer in St. Louis, uses AI tools for marketing, brainstorming, and administrative tasks, emphasising that they "support the human eye, not replace it".

However, experts caution against over-reliance. Jen Baxter of Baxter Hill Interiors notes that AI lacks the understanding of client needs, building codes, and product specifications. She adds that while AI can suggest a design direction, it "can't feel how the light moves through a room".

Miles Smith of Graphisoft highlights the issue of biased data in AI-generated designs, often skewed toward Western aesthetics. He stresses the need for human oversight to ensure diversity and cultural depth.

Though AI is reshaping workflows, designers remain essential in delivering safe, personalised, and emotionally resonant interiors that go beyond what algorithms can achieve.
