Total like-for-like (LFL) homeware sales dropped by -6.59%, compared to a strong base of +9.06% during the same period last year. Both physical and online channels saw double-digit declines. In-store sales fell -13.16% from a previous gain of +12.98%, while non-store sales dropped -10.36%, building on a negative base of -7.84%.
This marks the sixth negative week for homewares in the past ten, with online channels showing consistent weakness. Overall LFL sales across all categories edged up just 0.08%.
BDO attributed the downturn to the UK's heatwave, which saw southeast England reach higher temperatures than Spain and Algeria. While fashion benefited from the weather with strong online growth, lifestyle and homeware categories struggled.
Footfall was down -0.5% overall, with high streets seeing a -2.0% decline. Shopping centres dropped -0.4%, while retail parks rose +2.6%, potentially due to easier car access and open-air layouts.
BDO said the hot, uneven weather contrasted sharply with last year's cooler, more stable conditions and likely discouraged homeware shopping.
