Louis De Poortere expands Ecorugs collection amid shift toward circularity

'Our mission: marrying beauty, longevity, and sustainability in every fibre'

Belgian textile manufacturer Louis De Poortere has expanded its Ecorugs collection, adapting its signature jacquard flatweave designs for indoor and outdoor use. Founded in 1929, the company has been known for weaving carpets, stair runners, broadloom, and rugs using techniques including Wilton and chenille jacquard flatweave.

Louis Dryon, general manager at Louis De Poortere, explained: 'Lifestyle trends increasingly treat terraces and gardens as extensions of living spaces. The shift prompted us to develop outdoor-compatible versions of our designs using mono-material polyester, which also makes the rugs easier to recycle.'

The 2025 Ecorugs collection features 40% recycled polyester content, doubling the recycled portion since its initial 2023 launch. Louis noted: 'Our goal is 100% recycled polyester, enabling closed-loop recycling and aligning with circular economy principles. Our membership in the Ellen MacArthur Foundation community was an important milestone on this path.'

Adapting the designs for outdoor conditions required iterative testing, especially to develop a colour bank that retained the appearance of existing ranges while meeting durability requirements. The company also introduced machine washability across the range. According to Louis, this feature "transforms maintenance" and extends the rugs' lifespan.

The brand's "Take Care" programme supports product return and recycling. Customers can scan a QR code on the rug label, arrange collection, and return the rug at no cost. Returned rugs are either refurbished for second use or recycled into new yarn. 'Since our rugs are mono-material, 100% polyester, they can be efficiently processed and recycled into new yarn and rugs, closing the loop,' Louis said.

Residential markets continue to show the highest uptake of Ecorugs, while hospitality and contract sectors are adopting the collection for alfresco areas and hybrid indoor-outdoor spaces. Louis cited recycled yarn supply chain scalability and maintaining consistent quality as challenges in production and design.

To support retail and design partners, Louis De Poortere offers specification sheets, carbon footprint comparisons, and cross-platform visualisation tools through its B2B portal.

Looking ahead, Louis said the company will focus on increasing recycled-content targets and refining its circular model. 'Our mission remains: marrying beauty, longevity, and sustainability in every fibre,' Louis said.
