CISOO Nigel Stansfield and CEO Laurel Hurd of Interface:

'We now know that you can run a flooring company without making concessions'

Interface, a global pioneer in modular flooring and sustainability, presents the new Impact Report 2024. Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Laurel Hurd and Chief Innovation & Sustainability Officer (CISOO) Nigel Stansfield look forward and back on a year of 'powerful initiatives, tangible results, and unwavering commitment to people and the planet.'

'We are in one of the most dynamic periods in recent history,' writes CEO Laurel Hurd in her foreword. 'Especially in such times, it is essential to stay true to who we are: a company built on purpose and that makes no compromises when it comes to sustainability.'

According to Interface itself, the company has been a leader in eco-friendly innovations in the flooring sector for years. The recent successes are partly due to the introduction of the One Interface strategy in 2023, where global teams have collaborated more closely on design, performance, and sustainability. 'Our culture, based on purpose and transparency, is why employees connect with us, customers choose our products, and we maintain our leadership position,' says Hurd.

One of the key announcements in the Impact Report is that in April 2024, Interface declared its ambition to be completely CO₂ negative by 2040 without using carbon offsets. Nigel Stansfield, Chief Innovation & Sustainability Officer, calls this step a logical continuation of a journey started more than thirty years ago. 'We now know that you can run a flooring company without making concessions, not even to the planet,' says Stansfield. 'We've set the standard in the industry and continue to raise the bar.'

Thanks to investments in innovative, low-carbon materials, Interface managed to reduce the CO₂ footprint of all its three product categories for the second consecutive year in 2024. The progress on the science-based targets for 2030 is also impressive: since 2019, emissions in the "procurement of goods and services" category, responsible for about half of total emissions, have decreased by no less than 42%.

Regenerative future
Both Hurd and Stansfield emphasise that Interface will continue building on this strong foundation in the coming years. The goals are ambitious but realistic thanks to experience, internal collaboration, and the determination to do more than just compensate. 'Our results in 2024 lay the groundwork for a regenerative future,' says Stansfield. 'We want to inspire others to stay the course too. Because together, we can tackle the climate crisis.'
