Strength in stillness for Danish furniture business as profits rise amid conflict

A long-standing family-run furniture business is continuing production in western Ukraine despite the ongoing war, citing the resilience of local workers and relatively calm conditions in the region. In 2024, the company recorded a pre-tax profit of 6.1 million Danish kroner, up from 4 million the previous year.

Raitex, founded in 1968 and based in Vissenbjerg on Funen, has specialised in outsourcing furniture production since the 1990s and operates its own factories in Ukraine. Despite the Russian invasion in February 2022, production was paused for only a week before resuming operations and exports.

The firm employs up to 400 people in Ukraine and remains committed to maintaining its manufacturing base there. 'The Ukrainians are a tough people, so we will continue to produce in Ukraine without hesitation,' said Kristian Leo Pedersen, who recently took over as CEO from his father Helge Leo Pedersen. Helge now serves as acting chairman of the board after leading the company for over 50 years.

In addition to its solid financial results, Raitex reported a gross profit of 15.8 million kroner in 2024, with operating profits reaching 5.9 million kroner. The company has maintained a stable workforce of 10 employees in Denmark and continues to see strong business performance, even as it navigates challenges presented by the conflict.

Raitex's decision to stay in Ukraine reflects both a belief in the strength of its local partners and a hope for peace in the near future.
