Momentum builds at fastest pace in two years in UK homeware retail

Furniture and lighting retail sales in the UK recorded their fastest year-on-year growth in over two years during April, continuing a strong recovery for the sector.

Sales rose by 7.5 percent in value to £1.19 billion compared to April 2024, according to new data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS). This marks the sharpest increase since December 2022 and the fourth consecutive month of rising sales.

The growth follows a prolonged downturn, with the category previously experiencing 15 months of declining sales. April's performance also reflected a 7.7 percent rise in volumes, the quantity of goods sold, the third consecutive monthly increase.

The broader retail market also showed strength. Excluding automotive fuel, total retail sales values climbed 7.4 percent to £36.4 billion year-on-year.

All figures are non-seasonally adjusted, highlighting the underlying strength of consumer demand without accounting for regular seasonal variations.

The latest data points to growing consumer confidence in the homeware segment, suggesting a sustained turnaround after last year's declines.
