Germany continues to demonstrate its robust export performance with the United States, posting a significant export surplus of €17.7 billion in the first quarter of 2025, according to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). This surplus, the largest Germany holds with any trading partner, underscores the country's position as a global industrial and design powerhouse, a trend with meaningful implications for the furniture and interior design sectors seeking to leverage Germany's export dynamism.

In the first quarter of 2025, German exports to the US totalled €41.2 billion, while imports stood at €23.5 billion. The export surplus was nearly 75%, maintaining steady growth compared to the same period last year when the surplus was €16.7 billion.
While motor vehicles and automotive parts dominate the export surplus at €7.8 billion, the interior and design sector can draw inspiration from related export categories. Notably, Germany posted a surplus of €3.7 billion in machinery, apparatus, and mechanical devices, and €2.5 billion in electrotechnical products, sectors that closely intersect with furniture manufacturing technologies and smart home innovations. For example, the export of lithium-ion batteries (important for modern furnishings with integrated technology) contributed a significant €155.6 million surplus, demonstrating Germany's foothold in cutting-edge materials and components relevant to interior solutions.
Pharmaceuticals and similar products also showed a strong export surplus of €4.2 billion, reflecting Germany's capacity for high-quality, precise manufacturing, qualities highly transferable to premium furniture production and bespoke interior fittings.
Germany's import surplus with the US was limited mainly to mineral fuels (€3.0 billion deficit), including oil and gas, which has less direct impact on the furniture sector but underscores the country's broader trade dynamics.
The Federal Statistical Office highlights that the US has been Germany's key export partner since 2024, with no trade deficit recorded since 1991, reinforcing a stable and favourable trade environment. This ongoing surplus signals ample opportunity for German furniture manufacturers and interior brands to expand their footprint in the lucrative US market, where demand for quality, innovation, and design excellence remains strong.
