Material Matters launches first international edition at 3daysofdesign, uniting global designers

Following three successful editions in London, Delizia Media announces the international debut of its acclaimed design fair, Material Matters, now launching in Copenhagen as part of 3daysofdesign 2025. The new event runs from 18–20 June at Ukraine House in Denmark, Gammel Dok, Christianshavn.

Curated to explore the power of materials in shaping sustainable futures, Material Matters Copenhagen features leading names and emerging innovators across multiple floors of installations and design activations.

On the ground floor, AHEC Europe (American Hardwood Export Council) presents No.1 Common, an installation by Kia Utzon-Frank of KUF Studio. The exhibition aims to reshape perceptions of timber quality by embracing overlooked hardwood grades. Designers Daniel Schofield (UK), Anna Maria Øfstedal Eng (Norway), and Andu Masebo (UK) have created bespoke pieces using No.1 Common grade timber, produced by Benchmark.

The project's central message is clear: "use what nature provides." According to AHEC Europe, 'American hardwood forests contain more than twice the volume of standing timber today as 50 years ago. To maximise the potential of this natural resource, we need to rethink how we use timber – learning to appreciate and utilise not just the most "pristine" cuts, which make up only up to 10 percent of the tree, but as much of the tree as possible.' Ultimately, No.1 Common questions conventional notions of quality and encourages more responsible material sourcing.

Upstairs, aluminium giant Hydro unveils a striking new edition of its R100 project, first shown during Milan Design Week. This latest iteration slashes transport emissions by 90%, sourcing all material and production within a 100-kilometre radius. The result is a curated collection of mono-material aluminium pieces by renowned designers including Sabine Marcelis, Keiji Takeuchi, Cecilie Manz, Daniel Rybakken, and Stefan Diez.

Hydro's journey began in November 2024 with the harvesting of 52 tonnes of post-consumer aluminium scrap—ranging from decommissioned light poles to greenhouse frames—now transformed into design objects through a tightly coordinated, low-impact production process in the Benelux region.

Other highlights include:

  • Aifunghi, a Dutch studio debuting internationally, using Mycelium Based Composite (MBC) to craft furniture from hemp fibres and mushroom roots.
  • Abalon, creator of Bio Corallo Porcelain, a 3D-printable ceramic material using 45% less mined material.
  • Patch Design, combining traditional weaving with 3D printing and recycled fishing nets.
  • The New Raw, turning plastic waste into tactile furniture through robotic printing.
  • Spark & Bell, showcasing Seraphín, a modular chandelier made from over 120 recycled CD cases.
  • Kjaer + Loege, offering electrical fittings in Nature Oak and White Fibre Concrete, inspired by childhood toys.
  • Finally, Material Resistance: Ukrainian Design in Action, hosted by Ukraine House in Denmark, will explore design in crisis and material innovation from war zones.

'We are so excited to be launching this new event in one of our favourite design cities,' said Material Matters co-founders Grant Gibson and William Knight. 'The London fair has been running successfully since 2022 and it feels like the right time to take the brand to a new audience. We are incredibly happy to be showcasing a string of thoughtful installations and products from the likes of AHEC Europe, Hydro, and our hosts Ukraine House in Denmark. We believe it will be a wonderful show.'
