Saturday, 22 March 2025, will be a historic day for JYSK. For the first time in its history, the home furnishings retailer will open a store in South America, with Uruguay taking the lead.
The store will open in Canelones, just north of the capital, Montevideo. It will operate under JYSK's franchise organisation and will be managed by a local franchisee.
'I can't wait to get started with our opening in Uruguay – an exciting market. I'm really looking forward to it. A store opening, no matter where, is always a unique event. I'm particularly curious to see how our customers respond to JYSK. Uruguay is a country with political and economic stability, and we have found an excellent franchise partner in Antelo Group. We look forward to working with them,' says Frederik Kroun, Franchise Director at JYSK.
High expectations
It is no coincidence that JYSK is beginning its venture near Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay.
'The vast majority of Uruguay's population lives in the south of the country along the coast, making the region around Montevideo the ideal place to start. I'm eager to see what we can learn from this new market,' says Frederik Kroun.
He continues: 'We are already exploring where the second store could be located. We expect it will also be in the metropolitan area of Montevideo, although the final decision has not yet been made. From there, we will evaluate our store openings and consider where we can expand further.'
The store in Uruguay will be supplied from JYSK's own distribution centres in Uldum (Denmark) and Valencia (Spain).
From Europe to the world
JYSK's franchise organisation opened its first international store in Greenland in 1984. With the addition of Uruguay, JYSK Franchise is now active in 21 countries, including Canada, Latvia, and Vietnam, with a total of 218 stores.
Including company-owned stores, Uruguay becomes the 49th country where JYSK operates. And the expansion continues: in April, JYSK will open its first stores in Morocco. This will not only mark the company's entry into its 50th country but also its debut on the African continent.
Globally, JYSK has more than 3,500 stores.
