Interview with Robert Bladh, CEO of Essem Design

'Emerging materials and a growing focus on reuse are becoming increasingly important'

As the CEO of Essem Design, Robert Bladh has been at the forefront of guiding the company through an eventful 2024, a year that brought both achievements and challenges. In this exclusive interview, Robert reflects on the highlights of the past year, from expanding the Nostalgi family to making strides in sustainability.

Robert Bladh. Right: Nostalgi Bench.

As we've just started the new year, how do you look back on 2024? What were last year's highlights and challenges?
'We have taken significant steps in our sustainability efforts by addressing Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, enabling us to embark on the journey to reduce our total carbon footprint. Additionally, we have expanded and renovated our factory and office to meet future demands. This year, we proudly launched two new products in our Nostalgi family—a bench and a hanger. However, we have faced challenges due to declining sales caused by the economic downturn in our markets.'

What would you say was the biggest challenge for the industry in 2024?
'We are actively adapting our operations to comply with various EU directives and transitioning towards new circular business models, all while several industries are facing tough conditions.'

Nostalgi Hanger.

What were some of the trends last year, and do you expect them to continue into the new year?
'Emerging materials and a growing focus on reuse are becoming increasingly important. Combined with rapid digital development, these areas will be our strategic focus moving forward.'

What are your plans for 2025?
'Our priorities include developing our circular business model, enhancing transparency, strengthening our export market, and launching new products within our Classic family.'
