OEO Studio's modern tribute to ancient design in the Structures collection

The latest series of rugs by OEO Studio for Massimo Copenhagen seamlessly blends ancient Asian aesthetics with Scandinavian design values, reimagined in a contemporary context. By revisiting the graphic qualities of the original collection, these new rugs present a design that is subtly understated yet distinctly expressive, enhancing their intriguing appeal.

A Cross-Cultural Tribute to Timeless Civilisations
The inspiration behind the Structures collection lies in 'traces of man', embodying a strong cross-cultural approach. The collection's patterns evoke references to past civilisations, drawing influence from old Chinese stamps, as well as rural art and folklore. This combination creates compelling patterns that speak with a bold, evocative vernacular, resonating on an emotional and instinctive level.

Structures 2.0 diverges from the original collection not only through its more subdued colour palette but also with new material choices and weaving techniques. While the first collection was designed primarily for private spaces, featuring luxurious combinations of silky bamboo fibres and high-quality New Zealand wool—hand-tufted with carved patterns—the updated rugs are crafted from 100% New Zealand wool with an added organic cotton base layer. This reinterpretation prioritises durability and resilience, making them ideal for upscale public spaces and luxury hotels.

The revised colour scheme is more muted than its predecessor, allowing the design to assume a sophisticated, mystical quality. 'When designing spaces for people, key elements such as light, sound, contrast, and tactility are crucial for creating a welcoming environment. Incorporating textiles is an effective way to introduce a softer, more inviting element. Textiles can add colour, pattern, and texture, as well as help define spaces, diffuse light, and absorb sound.'

'The Structures collection currently comprises three unique variations, each hand-tufted by skilled artisans using the highest quality New Zealand wool yarn. Available in three rich, yet elegantly understated shades—Volcano Dust, Pale Rose, and Arctic Green—the new series brings timeless design to modern living and high-end hospitality settings,' says Thomas Lykke, OEO Studio.
