Klarna, the buy-now-pay-later service, plans to replace almost half of its employees with artificial intelligence (AI). CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski announced this in notes to the company's quarterly results. Although Klarna has previously reduced its workforce from 5,000 to 3,800 employees, the company is considering reducing this further to around 2,000 employees in the coming years.
Siemiatkowski stresses the benefits of AI, even if it results in fewer jobs. He argues that this is an issue the government should be concerned about. According to him, AI makes it possible to achieve more with fewer people, which has contributed to an increase in annual revenue per employee from $400,000 to $700,000.
