The sofa serves as a central fixture in many living rooms, where people eat, watch TV, and increasingly work from home. A survey conducted by Wayfair of 2,000 German households sought to quantify the time Germans spend on their sofas.

Berlin leads the pack with an average of 3 hours and 34 minutes spent on the sofa daily, amounting to roughly 25 hours per week. Hamburg follows closely, with an average of 3 hours and 30 minutes, and Saxony-Anhalt reports 3 hours and 23 minutes.
Younger generations, particularly Generation Z (40%) and Millennials (38%), are notably prone to falling asleep on the sofa due to work exhaustion. Across the board, 55% of respondents fall asleep while watching TV, predominantly among those aged 44 to 59, while 22% drift off while reading.
There is a significant gender disparity in sofa cleaning habits: 16% of men clean their sofas several times a week, compared to only 12% of women. Bremen (25%) and Hesse (20%) are regions where sofa maintenance is notably higher.
Daniela Venturini, Art Director and Trend Forecaster at Wayfair, comments on the study in an article in Moebelkultur.de, stating that the findings highlight the sofa's role as more than just a piece of living room furniture. It is increasingly seen as the heart of the home, especially with the rise of remote and hybrid work, making it a multifunctional space for dining, working, or relaxing.
