Strong increase in Swedish e-commerce in May

Swedish Trade's e-commerce indicator for the month of May estimates e-commerce turnover at SEK 14.9 billion. This is an increase of 29 percent compared to May 2023.

May was a strong month for e-commerce, which shows the strongest development figure in a single month since March 2021. May online sales developed weakly in both 2022 and 2023, which gives further impetus to the development in percentage terms. In contrast to earlier in the year, the main explanation is not that more e-shops but a markedly increased purchase amount. In particular, this applies to capital-intensive industries such as furniture and consumer electronics, which developed remarkably strongly.

'It is a very strong e-commerce indicator that was probably influenced by the fact that many Swedes received their tax refund during the period. More money in the wallet has enabled the purchase of capital-intensive goods such as furniture and home electronics, categories that have had a tough development in recent years. It remains to be seen whether the positive development continues, but so far this year e-commerce is doing significantly better than the last two years,' says Per Ljungberg, head of innovation at Swedish Trade.
