In Swedish retail sector, the number of bankruptcies decreased following increases in January and February

The number of bankruptcies in the retail sector decreased by 11 percent in March compared to the corresponding month last year. In March 2023, 85 companies in the subsector went bankrupt, compared to 76 in the corresponding month this year. This made the retail sector stand out in rather bleak statistics, with UC stating that the number of bankruptcies has increased in seven of the ten largest sectors included in the database, totaling 36 percent compared to March of the previous year. UC states that the number of layoffs due to bankruptcies has increased by almost 40 percent and that according to the operator's statistics, the number of new starts has been declining since 2023.

So far this year, from January to March, the number of bankruptcies in the retail sector has increased by 8 percent, with 251 companies going bankrupt compared to 233 in the same period last year.
