The market for floor and wall tiles in Austria shrank by nearly nine percent in 2023. Especially the renovation business declined rapidly, according to current data from a market study by the market research institute BRANCHENRADAR.com Marktanalyse.
'The rising construction prices are obviously stopping the renovation of wet rooms and the renewal of tiled floors in other building areas,' observes Dominique Otto, department head at BRANCHENRADAR.com Marktanalyse. According to the current BRANCHENRADAR study on floor and wall tiles in Austria, manufacturer sales of floor and wall tiles decreased by 8.8 percent in 2023 compared to the previous year, reaching 125.2 million euros.

The decline was mostly located in the renovation business. While revenues in new construction decreased by just around one million euros, a whopping eleven million euros were missing from the renovation market by the end of the year compared to the previous year's result. 'The construction industry should be careful not to calculate itself out of the renovation business,' says Otto, because 'a turnaround could be as difficult as bringing back dismissed skilled workers.'
