Artistic Director of London Design Biennale 2025 revealed

London Design Biennale's Artistic Director has been announced as Dr Samuel Ross MBE. Below we delve into the theme 'Surface Reflections' and Ross' thoughts about design in London. Plus, Wandsworth is 2025 London Borough of Culture.

British designer and artist Samuel Ross has been named as the Artistic Director of London Design Biennale 2025. Ross, the founder of A-COLD-WALL and SR_A SR_A, as well as the Black British Artists Grants Programme, has set the theme of Surface Reflections for 2025, which will explore how our ideas are fuelled by both our internal experiences and external influences.

In an interview with Evening Standard, Ross said, 'Our city is a catalyst of expression. London's soft power remains embedded within the creative sector. Designers, Artists & creatives fuel one another. As a participant, it's an honour to increase the city's velocity.'

On the theme, Ross said, 'The elder and child versions of ourselves, in spirit, harvest experiences pooled from the same well. The time between each visit to the well does not distort the composition of the water. A different reflection, or means of extraction, may occur over time, due to the compound's characteristics. Generations of design-thinkers portray similar behaviours.'

London Design Biennale will be held at Somerset House from 5-29 June 2025, where Ross will debut a series of large-scale sculptural works – his first major UK installation.
