Patricia Urquiola collaborates with Kvadrat:

Turning ocean-bound plastic into premium fabric

Patricia Urquiola collaborates with Kvadrat to develop the first upholstery fabric collection crafted entirely from ocean-bound plastic: Sport. The fabric was created in collaboration with the Swiss company #tide. #tide collects and upcyles ocean-bound plastic into raw materials, not only reducing pollution, but also safeguarding diverse ecosystems.

'The yarn used to produce Sport is derived entirely from ocean-bound plastic waste, collected within a maximum distance of 10 kilometres to the shoreline and 100 meters into the sea from coastlines and islands in Thailand. For every 1 kg of ocean-bound plastic waste collected, we create 1.92 metres of Sport', Kvadrat explains.

Sport is 100% sourced from ocean-bound plastic from coastal areas and shores, effectively preventing it from becoming ocean waste. The collected plastic primarily comprises PET bottles, which undergo meticulous sorting and cleaning processes, with no additional chemicals, given that PET materials are free of harsh and hazardous substances. Ultimately, this plastic is transformed into granules, thereby preparing it for further processing into yarn, which is compliant with REACH and RoHS regulations.
