AI's increasing role in 3D product design

In the realm of 3D product design, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming an increasingly influential player, particularly during the initial stages of image creation, brainstorming, and concept development. AI art generators are offering designers rapid access to a diverse spectrum of design concepts.

The AI-generated designs serve as a launching pad rather than a final product, but these initial concepts expedite the brainstorming phase. One of the key advantages of AI in 3D product design is rapid prototyping, enabling designers to iterate through multiple product versions in a digital environment, conserving both time and resources. The ease of sharing 3D models among various teams fosters collaboration, minimizing misunderstandings that often arise from 2D representations.

Ultimately human finesse is required for the final product. Once the initial design direction is set and the concept clarified, AI's role diminishes. While AI is excellent at defining the design brief quickly, it's not suited for delivering a product that meets all manufacturing, cost, and user-experience criteria. Traditional design tools take over at this stage, with AI remaining useful for specific tasks like material optimization and stress testing. Essentially, AI is most effective in expediting the early stages of the design process, offering inspiration and guiding designers toward innovative solutions.
